뉴욕타임스는 “Park Geun-hye, South Korea’s Ousted Leader, Is Arrested on Bribery Charges – 한국 전 대통령 박근혜 뇌물죄 혐의로 구속”이라는 제목으로 박근혜가 지난 12월 국회에서 탄핵당하고, 3월 10일 헌법재판소의 결정으로 대통령직에서 영구히 파면된 후 금요일 새벽 검찰이 청구한 구속영장이 법원에 의해 발부되며 감옥으로 이송되었다고 신속히 보도했다.

SEOUL, South Korea — Park Geun-hye, South Korea’s first female president and its first leader impeached and removed from office, was arrested on Friday on charges including bribery, extortion and abuse of power.

한국 서울 – 한국의 첫 여성 대통령이자 탄핵되어 파면된 첫 대통령인 박근혜 씨가 뇌물죄, 강요죄 및 권한남용을 포함한 혐의들로 금요일 구속되었다.

Judge Kang Bu-young of the Seoul Central District Court issued a warrant for her arrest, warning that if Ms. Park was not quickly taken into custody the former president might “destroy evidence.”

서울중앙지방법원 강부영 판사는 박근혜 전 대통령이 구치소에 신속하게 수감되지 않으면 “증거인멸”을 할 수 있다고 경고하며 박근혜에 대한 구속영장을 발부했다.

Ms. Park had spent the night in the prosecutor’s office waiting to learn if she would be placed under arrest. The warrant was issued shortly after 3 a.m., and she was led from the office to a jail outside Seoul, the South Korean capital. She is expected to remain in jail through her trial.

박근혜는 구속될 것인지의 여부를 기다리며 검찰청 대기실에서 밤을 보냈다. 구속영장은 새벽 3시 조금 지나 발부되었으며 박근혜는 검찰청에서 바로 한국의 수도인 서울 외곽의 감옥으로 이송되었다. 박근혜는 재판기간 동안 감옥에 있게 될 것으로 보인다.

Ms. Park is the first former South Korean leader put behind bars since two former military dictators were imprisoned on corruption and mutiny charges in the mid-1990s.

박근혜는 두 명의 전직 군부독재자들이 1990년대 중반 부패와 반란죄로 구속 수감된 이후 구속당하는 첫 번째 한국 전직 대통령이다.

Ms. Park was accused of conspiring with a longtime confidante, Choi Soon-sil, to collect tens of millions of dollars from big businesses, including more than $38 million in bribes from Samsung. Both Ms. Choi and Samsung’s top executive, Lee Jae-yong, have previously been arrested and are standing trial on several charges, including bribery.

박근혜는 오랜 친구인 최순실과 공모하여 삼성에서 받은 3천8백만 달러 이상의 뇌물을 포함, 수천만 달러를 대기업들로부터 받아낸 혐의를 받고 있다. 최 씨와 삼성 최고 경영인 이재용은 이미 구속되었으며 현재 뇌물죄를 포함한 몇 가지 혐의로 재판 중이다.

Just hours earlier, hundreds of people opposing Ms. Park’s arrest cried and shouted as her motorcade pulled out of her two-story, red brick house in southern Seoul for a 10-minute drive to the Seoul Central District Court for a hearing.

불과 몇 시간 전, 심의를 받기 위해 10분 거리의 서울중앙지방법원을 향해 박근혜를 태운 차량이 서울 강남에 위치한 2층의 빨간 벽돌집을 출발하자 박근혜의 구속을 반대하는 수백 명의 사람들이 울며 소리를 질렀다.

Her motorcade was briefly stopped when angry supporters tried to push past police officers lining the road.

“We can’t let you go!” they shouted, some of them trying to hurl themselves onto the road. The protesters also threw yellow plastic police fences at uniformed officers who tried to push them back.

Ms. Park, who has never accepted the Constitutional Court ruling that ended her presidency on March 10, did not answer questions shouted from reporters as she walked into the courthouse.

On Monday, prosecutors formally asked the Seoul Central District Court to issue a warrant so they could arrest Ms. Park on 13 criminal charges. On Thursday, the judge called a closed-door hearing for prosecutors and Ms. Park’s lawyers to argue whether an arrest warrant was justified.

지난 월요일 검찰은 13가지 범죄 혐의에 의거 박근혜를 구속할 수 있도록 영장을 발부해 줄 것을 공식적으로 서울중앙지방법원에 요청했다. 목요일, 판사는 구속영장 발부가 타당한지의 여부에 대해 검사와 박근혜의 변호인단이 찬반을 주장하는 비공개 심리를 진행했다.

The National Assembly voted overwhelmingly on Dec. 9 to impeach Ms. Park on charges of corruption and abuse of power, and she was formally removed from office on March 10.

국회는 12월 9일 부패와 권한남용 혐의로 박근혜 탄핵가결안을 압도적으로 가결했으며, 박근혜는 3월 10일 파면되었다.
